Wholistic Cardiology

Combining the best of modern medicine with wholistic treatments. To us, wholeness means fulfilling the current need to expand healing to reach mind, body, behavior, and environment.

My area of expertise is to help individuals navigate between the two worlds of traditional and alternative medicine. Most traditional doctors don’t work with alternative techniques and most practitioners of alternative medicine don’t support traditional treatments. There is a growing understanding that integrative medicine can provide a best-of-both-worlds solution, but there are few doctors who have direct experience and training in both forms of medicine. I am one of those doctors. I have worked with both styles and I can guide you through the decision, for example, when to use a coronary artery stent and when to use something like a lifestyle change or nutritional supplement in a non-emergency situation.

When there is an emergency, we need people like firefighters because they save lives. But we also work to prevent fires from starting in the first place. Traditional medical interventions are similar in that when you need them they save lives, but many of them do not stop the progression of coronary heart disease, hardening of the arteries, or aging; they are a temporary fix to resolve an emergency. We believe that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and very often that means a natural treatment. Sometimes this is not just a philosophical debate because there are people who avoid hospitals and doctors until it is too late, and other people who avoid any form of lifestyle adjustment until the problems are so severe even things like emergency surgery aren’t enough. Knowing when is the right time for each strategy and which specific treatment to select is my specialty and I can help you through this process.

Personalized Diagnosis and Treatment Plans

We do an evaluation that includes a comprehensive lifestyle inventory, blood work that goes beyond just measuring cholesterol levels, and we check markers of inflammation and oxidation often missed with the standard blood tests. We also perform a safety evaluation of your traditional testing and treatment results, to ensure that we minimize harm and maximize accurate information. With all this, we formalize a wholistic treatment plan that provides total risk factor management including your environment, genetics, diet, lifestyle, weight, psychology, existing prescriptions, nutritional/herbal supplements, age, and body type, etc. A key portion of this approach is a review of supplements you may be taking, to ensure that you are getting what you need but also that you are not taking anything you don't.

Most people believe that cholesterol is the main indicator of heart health. However, in truth many other factors are involved and we provide a wholistic diagnosis to revew all of the factors and get a complete picture of your personal situation. To help you understand and get a new perspective on how cholesterol actually influences your heart health, we have the below infographic, and we are happy o discuss this in more detail as part of an initial visit.
